Essay on What is Love - 1197 Words

What is Love? Love: What is it? Love, what is it? To many people love means many things. To others, to love is to place their happiness in one another. Others love can be how they feel about that special someone. Im not talking about the fatherly love or that motherly love. Im talking about the love that you feel towards someone. That special someone that you could possibly spend the rest of your life with. Webster defines love as a strong feeling of attraction resulting from sexual desire; enthusiasm or fondness. But to me love is not just a feeling, but it is the way that you treat that special someone that you care for. Treating them so kindly so theyll know you care and love them. Love in my eyes, is making that†¦show more content†¦Leading me into the pond. I felt as if this is the case because throughout the whole poem no names were said, and there was no one who replied when she asked would you like to wade in with me? As I read on I then replied yes, yes I would join you . Why, you might ask. Because of her actions, not her words. The poet or woman shows that she wants to be with you instead of telling you. Remember, to me love is in the actions not the words. As I continued to read and reflect about love and how it is expressed, I remembered a poem that I had written to show my girl-friend how she makes me feel. The name of this poem is called, She Struts. She walks with beauty, grace, and style. Even on a bad day she makes me smile. Head held high when mine is low, she struts by sexy, sassy and slow. Asking, Whats the matter?, as if she doesnt know. When there was no reply she turned, Sexy, sassy and slow. She looked in my face with hazel eyes and a smile Strutting toward me as if on a cat walk, Pausing then turning making my frown flip upside down She whispers in my ear softly, You love to see me this I know, But you love it more to see me go. Then turns and struts off sexy, sassy and slow. This poem like all of my others is about a woman and her actions. This particular woman is 19 years of age, five feet nine inches tall, with a stunning personality pursuing a modeling career. I named the poem She Struts because of the way she walks. As if always on the catShow MoreRelatedWhat Is Love? What It Is?1527 Words   |  7 PagesWhat is Love? When asked the question â€Å"What is Love?† what are some of the first things that come to mind? Sidney Sheldon’s Tell Me Your Dreams free essay sample

Sidney Sheldon’s Tell Me Your Dreams Tell Me Your Dreams, one of the most bizarre murder trials in fiction†¦ based on actual medical evidence, is a masterpiece of one of the world’s top bestselling authors, Sidney Sheldon. The story is all about three beautiful young women- Ashley, an introverted workaholic; Toni, an outgoing singer and dancer; and Allete, a shy artist are suspected of committing a series of brutal murders. In the end Ashley is shown to be traveling in a train displaying characteristics of all her three selves depicting her to have accepted all her alters as her own self. My favorite character is Ashley because despite of her past painful experience, she was brave enough to accept her fate and successfully overcome her Multiple Personality Disorder condition. Throughout the story, I was drawn to the personality of Allete, a gifted artist and a pretty young woman but extremely shy and soft-spoken. That although people see the potential in me, I was so inferior that I never believed in myself. I was inclined in arts and writing, but my inability to â€Å"show-off† and inferiority complex didn’t allow me to develop such skills. I like the style of writing of Sidney Sheldonthe way he gave me a mental image of the characters and his unique quality of thoughts in storytelling. He provides a fascinating and precise examination of the different aspects of multiple personality disorder through the characters of Ashley, Toni, and Alette. I love the first seven chapters of the book, I was amused by the vivid description of the different personalities of the characters and the well-organized chain of events. However, I was quite unsatisfied with the last part of the book. For a person who never experienced or never heard of stories about the Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) or also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), the ending appears to be unbelievable. I felt bored at the middle of the story because some portion of the book is predictable. I recommend the book for all women eighteen years old and above. They could relate into the different dilemmas young women of today usually face of. For those people who were sexually or mentally abused especially in there vulnerable years, they could draw inspiration and strength to the story of Ashley.

Franklin Delaney Roosevelt essays

Franklin Delaney Roosevelt essays Born in 1882, Franklin Delaney Roosevelt, nicknamed FDR by the press, was born into a very wealthy family. He still remained to carry a genuine compassion for ordinary people and a great spirit of optimism which the country badly needed. He graduated from Harvard University and although his main interest was politics, he decided to take a job in a law firm. In 1920 FDR ran for Vice President but did not make it. The following summer, at the age of twenty-nine, he came down with polio, only to remain paralyzed for the rest of his life. Using steel braces and a cane, FDR, along with the help of his son and aides, remained to disguise the fact that he was crippled, reason being that he was too determined and strong-minded to show anybody his real weakness involving his health. FDR spent much time recovering at Warm Springs in Georgia, where this was sometimes his only escape out of his busy life. After his success as governor of New York, many supporters of FDR believed he should try for the presidency. So it was, in the election of 1932, FDR would b ecome president for the next twelve years. During the time when FDR was the United States president, there were two major crises in the hands of the nation. Although FDR promised many Americans that there would be no war with Germany, there certainly was; FDR tried to devise a plan with Churchill to defeat Hitler and have everlasting victory over this man. At this same time, FDRs assistant, Missy Halliand, suffered a stroke and was never the same again. FDR kept himself in his own state of loneliness, probably never to be the same man again. Three days after the U.S.S. Greer was fired on, FDRs mother fell sick and he sat by her side until she died. He would often ask his daughter Anna to take him to her grave where he would sit for hours; he found safeness and security when he was there. Shortly ...

Green Buildings Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Green Buildings - Essay Example Conventional use of energy requires exploitation of resources such as coal in the production of electricity, use of hydropower among other energy sources that have been in use for many years. Consequently, the use of the above sources of energy in buildings leads to massive environmental pollution and environmental degradation. For instance, the use of coal to produce electricity results in massive emission of carbon dioxide and environmental degradation in areas were cola has to be mined. As a result, the entire process leads to land and environmental degradation among other negative effects. To reduce environmental degradation and pollution from emissions, buildings are designed and constructed with features that minimise overreliance on conventional energy by relying more on natural lighting and energy conservation designs. There are various standards of grading buildings on a scale, which reflects the extent of energy efficiency in such buildings. In other words, the more efficie nt a building is, the more green such a building is, with several certification bodies coming up to rate and certify energy and resource efficient buildings. The research aims at investigating different requirements before certifying a building as green and the requirements that a building has to meet to warrant the green title. A few case studies of highly rated green buildings will be analysed with respect to the perspective of energy and resources efficiency, and how such buildings contribute to environmental sustainability. Moreover, the dissertation will seek to investigate different aspects that are used to rate these buildings and the different ratings used by the recognized certification bodies with close investigation of implications of building rating in addition to the current market response to green construction. Though the concept of green building dates back to the early 90s when groups advocating for sustainable

Marketing Communications in Hospitality Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Marketing Communications in Hospitality - Essay Example Service marketing and the tangible product marketing are not the same. Service marketing required some more specifications as far as the marketing is concern. The traditional four Ps of marketing are very much important for the product marketing. However, according to Crane (1993), the additional three Ps are also very much important for the service oriented business. And they are people, physical evidence and the process. People: The people are the primary part of the service delivery process and these are the main people who can influence the customer’s mind towards the product. The perception towards the products relies on these people. The person who performs the service delivery he is the most important personnel in the service industry towards the customer’s mind. The people who demonstrate the product, he or she must know all the aspects of the products so he or she can explain all the details of the service. For any hospitality businesses which are mostly service oriented are much tougher to sell as the customers do not get the actual feelings of the product while they are buying the product. However, they feel the product while they are availing the service and that is basically after they buy the product. For this particular reason, the physical evidence of the product is very much important. The actual feeling of the products must be created by the sales person at the point of sales towards the customer so the customers would be feeling confident to buy the products. Process: This particular functional activity is actually the procedure or mechanism and flow of work towards the service. The proper process can be a great positive point

Physical Education and Academic Achievement in 10th grade Essay Example for Free

Physical Education and Academic Achievement in 10th grade Essay Physical education in high schools in the United States of America is the one branch of academic filed which is gaining fast attention on the side of the Government policy, the schools administration. More and more emphasis-shift is being observed toward orientation of the students and their parents with regard to the importance of physical education and its connection with real life, health, and, above all, with higher academic achievement. In schools, although all grades bear importance with relation to physical education and higher academic achievement and attendance rate, it is, however, the ninth and tenth-grades where there is a turning point for the students. Therefore, it is the time for the schools administration to pay more attention toward the planning and application of the physical education in these grades. â€Å"Physical activity is critical to the development and maintenance of good health. The goal of physical education is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity† (aahperd. org) It is apt to say that the way their physical education is planned and implemented required different parameters. This is so because the demands of students are different. They need to be exposed to such physical activities which not only excite them but also create a sense of responsibility in them; the main focus of such activities should then be to prepare them for real-life situation and challenges. Read more:  Physical Education Essays The present paper examines the link between physical education in 10th-grade and higher academic achievement in secondary schools of the United States of America. It also focuses on the link between physical education and its advantages when it comes to higher attendance rate and so on. The paper also investigates the findings of some major studies conducted in the area of academic achievement and its hypothesized relationship with such other diverse areas as after-school pursuits, homework phenomena, types of activities in and out of school, cross gender and ethnicity issues. This is to give the reader a proper understanding of the major issues in the present debate of achievement in high school and particularly of the tenth-graders. Review of Literature Physical education is a â€Å"systematic instruction in sports, exercises, and hygiene given as part of a school or college program† (infoplease. com). Thus, there are certain goals to be met by implementing the physical education scenario. There have been considerable attempts in encircling the physical education curriculum in the United States of America. However, it is only recently that more and more emphasis is being laid on the importance of physical education and its link between higher academic achievement and proportionate significance of attendance rate. Since the year 1987, NASPE (the National Association for Sport and Physical Education) has been in constant pursuit in the updated information about the awareness in public of physical education in US education system. There are certain reservations that come to us in this regard. Three of them are mainly discussed in the present literature about physical education in the US educational system. These are: (1) There is no federal law, as yet, which says that physical education is to be provided to the students in the US education system; also there are not listed any incentives to offer physical education programs. 2) Although states may come up with some ground for the physical education policies, the state schools are free to work on their own in promoting, retaining, reducing the physical education portfolio in their own way. ) Another issue is that many states let go the responsibility for all content taught in schools to local school districts. (pe4life. com) The evidence is also found on other literature and net resources that plainly make it public that in the United States of America, physical education is not something prioritized. Even physical education in high school and elsewhere are â€Å"in sorry shape† and that the physical education â€Å"has been squeezed out of school by new curriculum requirements and other factors† (ducationworld. om). Apart from this, there is now word by such professionals as physicians who see that physical education is very necessary for a better future generation. More solid evidence comes form the Report to the President: Promoting Better Health for Young People through Physical Activity and Sports. In this report, Donna Shalala, Health and Human Services Secretary, and Richard Riley, Education Secretary, boldly wrote: â€Å"Our nation’s young people are, in large measure, inactive, unfit, and increasingly overweight. This report should stimulate action to make sure that daily physical activity for young people becomes the norm in our nation† (pe4life. com). Although we can see that today more and more attention is being paid to the physical education policy in US education system, there are grave critical areas that need to be addressed for a better physical education policy. For example there are trends of abating physical education time in schools because of pressure from academic side. This is very much a problem present in today’s education system. The simple fact is that more and more research findings are coming along with results that show that the old maxim â€Å"sound mind in a sound body† is aptly right. Thus it is now acknowledged that the students who are physically fit perform better on the academic side as well. In this connection we see that: â€Å"a 2002 California Department of Education study found a direct correlation between higher levels of physical fitness and higher academic test scores. According to Delaine Eastin, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, We now have the proof weve been looking for: students achieve best when they are physically fit† (pe4life. com (b)). As such, a new educational approach is now being said to be coming up on the educational front of the US schools that is called ‘total mind, total body educational approach’. In addition to the above, U. S. Surgeon General Report states that â€Å"Nearly two out of three adult Americans, or 130 million of us, are overweight or obese†; as such The health problems related to our growing girths are well known – more heart diseases, diabetes and other weigh-related ailments that send 300,000 Americans to an early grave every year. In fact, if childhood obesity continues to grow at current levels, some health officials contend, this generation of youngsters may actually have a shorter lifespan than their parents – a first in history† (smc. edu). When the report gives this alerting call to the nation, it is of much relief that in the same report the U. S. surgeons also carve out some strategies to overcome the problem. Among these strategies, the most prominent place is give to the physical education for the youths in the high schools. However, this is also not wrong to state that with the advent of the recognition of physical education in high schools, specially in ninth- and tenth-grades, another debate has taken birth: Whether or not physical education grade be included in high school students’ GPA. This school of thought considers that inclusion of physical education grades in student’s GPA will boost up students’ morale and will encourage them to do better in the physical education class because â€Å"Physical education is truly a microcosm of life, and every lesson taught has the potential to translate into the real world and prepare students to become healthy, productive members of society† (elibrary. bigchalk. com). Whatever the arguments are, we can be certain that in today’s literature about physical activity and high schools, physical education is something that needs more and more space in schools policies so that a better tomorrow can be handed down to our future generation that is already getting more pressure from academic side. If we look at the schools curriculum regarding physical education of ninth- and tenth-grades, we find that there are no serious attempts at defining the education. For example, a school in US states only three basic goals for physical education for the ninth- and tenth-grades (benton. k12. wi. us). Another school very shortly gives only the names of the physical activities to be observed by the students (rockingham. k12. va. us). This kind of treatment is in abundance and needs serious attention on the part of the government and school administrations to bring solid measures for the improvement in this area. Physical Education and Academic Achievement in 10th-grade When it comes to physical education in high schools, we find that it is very important for people who are in grades ninth and tenth because â€Å"This is an age when students begin to impose self-judgement in terms of accepting their physical appearance and their willingness to involve themselves in positive physical activities† (teacherweb. com). According to the Physical Activity and Health (a report of the surgeon genera) there is deep linkage between physical education and academic achievement. Physical education makes it possible for a better and healthy start in life enabling students to go for challenges that are not touched upon by those who are not active through physical activity. Moreover, the report suggests that schools should create such programs that can offer students opportunities by which they can get into physical activity. At this stage, this becomes more important because that report informs that as people grow, they show more and more declination in goring for physical activity: â€Å"Physical activity declines dramatically with age during adolescence† (cdc. gov). Thus, there is stark need that students of ninth and tenth-grade must be made aware of the importance of physical education and their academic achievement. The physical education should also be given priority by the school administration so that a sound educational environment can be achieved for healthier and academically better grounds for the students of high schools. This has been found through the research that physical activities may enhance cognitive functioning of the brain. This, as a result, may explain the relationship found between the students’ involvement in physical activities and their academic success (nps. 12. va. us). There are three major findings in the literature that relate physical activity involvement and the cognitive functioning. These are: 1) There is a significantly â€Å"positive relationship between physical activity and cognitive functioning in children†; 2) â€Å"Results support possibility that participation in physical activity causes improvements in cognitive function†; 3) â€Å"Acute bouts of physical activity exert short-term positive benefits on the behavioural and cognitive functioning of youths†; ) It has also been found that â€Å"Being on a school sports team and having a positive achievement orientation were positively associated with physical activity levels† (holidaycalendar. dsr. wa). Therefore, from this very analysis it becomes pretty clear that in 10th grade (or roughly in high school), physical education plays a very important role as far as the phenomena of long, healthy life is concerned; as far as real-life active participation by the youth is concerned; and, above all, their academic achievement is concerned. However, looking at the picture more closely, we find that the present scenario in the United States of America, when it comes to physical education, academic success, link between physical education and academic success and real-life situation; there are certain challenges present to the Government. For example, â€Å"Nearly half of young people aged 12-21 are not vigorously active on a regular basis and physical activity declines dramatically with age during adolescence† (arlington. k12. va. us). And this has surely given the government a call of high alert because it is simply suggested that less physical activity on the side of the youth will give rise to ailments that will in return proportionately affect academic achievement of the students. Thus, today we can see that the United States of America is building more solid policies for coping up with the situation. In this very connection, a recent example is the President’s Challenge program, which purely focuses on bringing the people of the U.  S. to the physical activity grounds so that a healthier society for the future can be the possibility. This is â€Å"a program that encourages all Americans to make being active part of their everyday lives. No matter what your activity and fitness level, the Presidents Challenge can help motivate you to improve† (presidentschallenge. org). The Presidential Challenge program is all about remaining with an active lifestyle and the program specifically focuses on how to assess the citizens in this regard. This program also introduces some rewards for the participants of the program like PALA (Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (presidentschallenge. org). This simply gives us the idea that the government of the U. S. has come up with grave policies which focus on the physical fitness of the citizens for a better tomorrow and a healthy society. Physical Education and Academic Achievement Debate  There are different schools of thoughts within the research that circle around the relationship between academic achievement in students and such other phenomena as physical education, homework, social loafing, and so forth. A considerable area of research exists that especially takes into examination the students of eighth to tenth grade. For example the article After-school pursuits, ethnicity, and achievement for 8th- and 10th-grade students which is one of the remarkable piece showing the contribution of people like James B.  Schreiber , Elisha A. Chambers, Walberg, Paschal, Weinstein, Cooper, and so on. Thus the proponents of homework suggest that â€Å"Homework has been shown to have a positive relationship with† academic achievement. And that there is also a proportionate difference between the amount of time spent on homework (After-School Pursuits). However, the other side of the pole comes up with the argument that there is not total contribution that can be related to homework alone when looking into the matter of higher academic achievement. This school of though aptly analyzes the effects of physical education on academic achievement of the students. For example, a research review by Holland and Andre in the year 1987 brought into their examination the relationship, if any, between physical education or athletic participation and academic achievement in the students. Their findings brought some more elements of debate in the intellectual circle because they found that there were sex-related differences among students as far as physical education and academic achievement is concerned. They reported that the research demonstrated that male high school athletes received somewhat higher grade point averages (GPAs) than did nonathletes. However, when one considers standardized achievement or aptitude tests, boys whose only after-school activity was sports scored lower than national averages on the Standardized achievement Test. No significant differences in GPAs or standardized tests were observed between female athletes and nonathletes† (After-School Pursuits).

The child may not seem to be abl e to hear you and does not respond, but when hearing a distant noise like a truck or train, this will get their attention immediately. Teens with autism seem to start changing their behavior. They may seem to excel in certain skills but with that their ability to understand and relate to others expressions. They also seem to have more of an issue understanding and going through things with emerging sexuality and puberty.

Dissecting of a Pig

Purpose: How are the external features and internal organ systems of a fetal pig organized? Introduction: Sus scrofa, or the domestic pig is a member of the class Mammalia and the order Artiodactyla. Since we as humans are also a member of class Mammalia, we have a good deal in common biologically with pigs, although we might not like to think so. Since we have a good deal in common, it is very helpful for us to study these animals both anatomically and physiologically. We do this when we test medicines on pigs, perfect surgical procedures on pigs, and even when we used to use pig valves for replacements in human hearts. Thus the pig is a first-rate example of a mammal and the purpose of this lab is to recognize the specific similarities between the pig and ourselves as humans. As the pig is a mammal, many aspects of its structural and functional organization are identical with those of other humans. Shared traits of those of a pig and human are their mammary glands, common hair, live birth, metabolic systems, similar organ systems, and basic body form. Swine are widely used in research and testing. They share anatomic and physiologic characteristics with humans that make them unique and viable model for any research. Their gastrointestinal anatomy has some significant differences from that of humans; however, the physiology of their digestive processes has made them a valuable model for digestive diseases. The urinary system of swine is similar to humans in many ways, especially in the anatomy and function of the kidneys. The anatomy and physiology of organs such as the liver, pancreas, kidney and heart have also made this species the primary species of interest for doctors to gain a better understanding on how the human body generates. Hypothesis As the pig is a mammal, many aspects of its structural and functional organization are identical with those of other mammals, including humans. Thus, the study of the fetal pig is in a very real sense; a study of humans. When we cut into the fetal pig I suspect for the digestive system that I will see the diaphragm Materials: †¢Fetal pig, preserved †¢Dissecting tray †¢Cord/twine †¢Dissecting kit †¢Paper towel †¢Plastic bags (2) †¢Gloves †¢Ruler/meter stick Procedure: †¢External Anatomy †¢Digestive System †¢Respiratory System †¢Circulatory System External Anatomy As I analyzed our fetal pig I established that the ears and eyes are lateral to its head , the tail is posterior to the nose. On my fetal pig he had 4 digits

Law Assignment for Child Protection

Law Essay Case Study of Stephanie and Stephen. This essay shall be based on the assumption that I am a Local authority social worker given the case referral of Stephanie and Stephen. The essay shall be focusing on the laws, policy and procedures that will guide through the assessment process of this case and how these can be used to meet the needs of all concerned. The assignment includes discussions on some of the key aspects of framework for the assessment of children in need and their families and The Children’s Act 1989, in particular section 17, duty to safeguard and I will incorporate anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practice.Stephanie and Stephen are under the age of 18, this therefore puts them into the category of both of them being classed as children. Under the Children Act 1989 it clearly states that any person under the age of 18 and 16 if married is seen as a child. This consequently places a statutory duty on any local authority child social care worker t o protect them from any harm and promote their well-being. Section 17 (1. ) of the Children Act 1989 says that â€Å"Local Authorities, have a general duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children within their area are in need† Subsequent to receiving this referral and acting in agreement to the primary aims of the Government Policy, my role and responsibility is to make sure that both Stephanie and Stephen are protected from any harm and that their development needs are met accordingly and appropriately. In the course of this, if I believed that a crime had been committed, I would have a duty to report this immediately to the police.Section 47 of the Children Act 1989 states that â€Å" Children's Social Care Services must inform the police whenever they receive a referral, which may constitute a criminal offence against a child, even when they have decided that they are dealing with the referral as a Section 17† (www. Proceduresonline. com) It is my duty to e stablish if any, the level of risk to Stephanie and Stephen and to use legislation where necessary. The identification of a high-risk individual provides the mechanism for ensuring that children are protected hile avoiding unneeded intervention. (Parton et al. 1997) To try and establish the course of action, I will be guided by the Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families and Working Together to Safeguard Children to help me in my decision making, planning and if any the intervention that may be required. These are two acts that were issued under Section 7 of the Local Authority Act 1970 which required Social Services to act under there general guidance. This Framework of Assessment will take into account the development needs of the child, unlike the Children Act 1989 that until the mid 1990’s mostly focused on the incidents of abuse rather than the development needs of the child. (Department of Health et al. 2000) By use of taking a holistic view t o the ‘Assessment Framework’, information will be gathered and analysed within three domains of the Assessment Framework namely: the child’s developmental needs, the parent’s capacity to respond appropriately to those needs and the wider family and environmental factors. The Framework is also linked closely to Every Child Matters which aims to ensure the well-being of children and young people from birth to 19. This means that the Government aim is for every child whatever their background or circumstances have the relevant support they need in order to be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic well-being (Every Child Matters and Outcomes) It is important that all agencies collaborate and work together to share information.Working Together to Safeguard Children document sets out how all agencies and professionals in the statutory, voluntary and independent sectors should work together to promote children's w elfare and protect them from abuse and neglect requires those agencies to share information. The first point of contact I would make would be with the school and learning mentor. Under s. 27 (7. 4) of the Children Act 1989 the school is obliged by law to assist me with any additional information that might be of help to this particular case. (www. legislation. It is the school that expressed concern and by acting upon this they then completed and sent a Common Assessment Framework (CAF) â€Å"The CAF is a shared assessment and planning framework for use across all children's services and Local areas in England. It aims to help the early identification of children's additional needs and promote co-ordinated service provisions to meet them† (www. cwdcouncil. org) I may also make enquires to the police as to whether there has been any reported incidents, especially taking into account that there is issues of substance misuse and domestic violence. When domestic violence is added into the equation it is clear that the children could be at risk of significant harm. â€Å"Child witnesses of domestic violence greatly impacts upon children’s development causing emotional harm†. (Mullander et al 2002: 6) Under Section 120 of the Adoption and Children Act 2002 states that: â€Å"Children living in households where domestic violence is happening are now identified as â€Å"at risk† under the Adoption and Children Act 2002.From 31 January 2005, Section 120 of this act extended the legal definition of harming children to include harm suffered by seeing or hearing ill treatment of others. (www. womensaid) Additional information may be gathered from other professional such as the child’s General Practitioner (GP) and dentist. Neglecting to take a child to see the doctor or dentist can be seen as neglect in some cases. I would also read through old case notes and talk to previous social care professionals that were involved with the family w hen they were accommodated.Section 20 of the Children Act 1989 defines â€Å"the term accommodated child refers to a child or young person for whom the Local Authority has provided accommodation with parental consent† (Children Act 1989) This is something that can be done without the need to apply to court and it is a way of working in partnership with the parents and empowering the parents to be involved in the ongoing plans for their child. This can be reassessed if the parents becomes uncooperative or inconsistent or commitment to the child. In the event of this the need for care proceeding may be required. (Legislation. gov. uk). From the information already received I notice that both Stephanie and Stephen wish to remain with their parents. The intention of the Children Act 1989 is to keep families together and it should only be that a child is removed as a last resort. Section 47 (5a) of the Children Act 1989 (inserted by the Children Act 2004) says that we need to take account of the wishes and feeling of the child. It is important that in the incident that further action is needed I take into account the fact that the children want to remain where they are but I must balance the risk over the choice. Under the Children Act 1989 (6. 1) â€Å"A decision to remove a child from home must balance the likely immediate and long-term effects of removing the child against the possible harm if the child is left at home. This decision should also take into account the need either to secure evidence of criminal offences or arrest suspects† (Children Act 1989)My next course of action would be to visit the family home and carry out an initial assessment. If I did not feel the children were at immediate risk, I would get in touch with the parents and arrange a time and date for me to visit, however if believed I would be putting the children at risk by doing this, I would consider a unannounced visit. I need to be aware that I will be intervening in the p ersonal lives of Stephanie, Stephen and their parents and my visit may not be welcomed by the family and viewed as a huge invasion and deprivation of their human rights.Article 8 of the Human Rights Act 1998 it states that; â€Å"(1) everyone has the right for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence. (2) There shall be no interference by a public authority with the exercise of this right except such as is in accordance with the law and is necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security, public safety or the economic well-being of the country, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others† (news. bbc. o. uk) They are within their rights to refuse me entry into their home and as a social worker I do not have the power to enforce this. The police would have to be called if I alleged the children were at immediate risk they would then have the power to remove under Section 46 (6. 7)† These are to be used in cases of immediate emergency where the delay of applying for an Emergency Protection Order would pose significant harm to a child. This Order should not be used where a Local Authority can apply for an Emergency Protection Order and has sufficient time to do so. Children Act 1989) The reason for the initial visit is so I can establish if there are concerns and what action if any would be required next. I would need to talk to all concerned and maybe possible extended family to fully understand what is happening within this family. It is important to â€Å"Ascertain the wishes and feelings of child, parents and others relevant to fully address the problems experienced†. (Brammer, A (2003) p, 128) Throughout this assessment it imperative that Stephanie and Stephen remain paramount and the focus of this investigation. Working with family members is not an end in itself; the objective must always be to safegu ard and promote the welfare of the child. The child therefore must be kept in focus. It requires sensitivity and understanding of their circumstances of families and their particular needs† (Framework for Assessing Children in Need and their Families, p. 13, 1. 45) Stephanie and Stephen have rights and it is important that as a social worker I strive to ensure that they are treated as individuals and without discrimination and take full account their wishes, feelings and experiences.By not respecting the children and listening to them because of their age could be seen as discrimination, people are often discriminated because of age whether this being young or old, as social workers it is important that we apply anti-discriminatory practice at all times and to challenge others who discriminate against others. Section 12 of the United Nation Convention on the Right of the Child, (UNCRC) states, â€Å"Children and young people have a right to express a view about things that af fect them† (United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child)I would not withhold any knowledge that I believed may be beneficial to Stephanie and Stephen and their parents. The family may require legal advice and may need sign posting to other outside agencies that could offer independent advice and support. By withholding any information I run the chance of the family being oppressed and as a social worker this is something we would not do. â€Å"A social work practice that does not take account of oppression cannot be seen as good practice no matter how high its standards in other respects. † (Thompson, N. 2000) pg11) For children to enjoy and achieve they need to attend school, this will give them the chance to reach their full potential and the opportunity to improve their life chances. It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that Stephanie and Stephen attend school. â€Å"The law requires parents to make sure their children receive a full-time educa tion suitable to their needs. For most children this means attending school regularly. As a last resort, schools and local authorities have legal powers to deal with poor attendance. † (www. direct. gov. uk)Stephanie has also told the school that she and her brother are often left home alone. The law of the Government in the UK does not have an age limit for leaving children alone. To ensure they are safe, I would need to explore the level of understanding and maturity of both children, the Children and Young Person’s Act 1993, â€Å"parents in England and Wales can be prosecuted for wilful neglect if they leave a child unsupervised in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or harm to health† (Children and Young Person Act 1993) The other issues of the cooking and home conditions would be explored. It might be that Stephanie likes to cook and this has been her choice, but I would need to ensure this was not something she was being made to do and it is agai n safe for her to do and are they having a healthy diet. The home conditions will be something I will be taking notice of during the visit. Not everyone has the same standards of living and what one person sees as unacceptable is not necessarily the case. Is the home weather proof and free from damp and cold, is it free of hazards, such as syringes left around or illegal substances, is the home clean enough to prevent any infection of any kind. The visit could result in a number of finding and each one is different: It could be as simple as I have found no concerns and no further action is needed. (NFA) Section 17 Children Act 1989- Child in Need Section 47 Children Act 1989-Duty to investigate- Section 31 Children Act 1989-Interim Care Order Section 20- Accommodated- Section 44- Emergency Protection Order So as you can see there is no way of saying which way a assessment will turn out, every case should be treated individually. In conclusion to this essay, I have discovered the impo rtance of understanding the laws that surrounds child protection.Child protection is very complex and our service will not always be welcomed by service users, but it is hoped that through good practice and guidance of the laws, Framework Assessment and Working Together to safeguard children, we are able to keep families together and only remove children as a last resort. It is however evident that this will not always be the case and children will have to be removed against their wishes and the wishes of their families but as it is important that the child remains the focus and in the centre at all times.I managed to establish the significance of practicing anti-discriminative and anti- oppressive practice whilst promoting the rights of children. Families will no doubt feel powerless within this situation and we must continue to empower them at all times. Social Workers are inclined only to get the bad press, but can they win the vote of the public? Time will tell so for ++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++now; we are damned if we do and damned if we don’t. + – .

Reformation and Ritual essays

Reformation and Ritual essays Question: What attitude or attitudes did the Reformations take towards popular religious forms? And how did the Reformations themselves come to embody ritual elements? The Reformation was a period of much social unrest. Whilst there existed a physical struggle evident upon the surface, underneath lie an intense philosophical and religious debate that served to test and question the values of Catholicism and the reasons for the need for change argued by the Protestant. The Reformation movement challenged the Catholic belief system. It argued against the praising and worshipping of icons and other such relics and argued that all praise and worship should be reserved for the Word of God and God alone. However, there is evidence to suggest that early Protestants felt a need for the reassurance offered by such icons and further, it has been argued, that the Protestant Reformers, in attempting to destroy ritual, actually served to strengthen Catholic belief in same. The irony is, in that attempting to destroy such rituals, the movement actually served to embody ritual elements. The methods by which it attempted to destroy ritual, can actually be interp reted as being ritualistic in and of themselves. The Christian Sacraments were and are an important part of Catholic life. In understanding the significance of such sacraments to the Catholic and the theoretical arguments against same put forward by the Protestant Reformer, the need for the Reformer to extinguish such importance, becomes evident. For both the Catholic and the Orthodox the Eucharist represented and represents the body of Christ. It is believed that initially, the Eucharist is simply unleavened bread, however upon being blessed such bread actually turns into the body of Christ, a metaphysical transformation occurs that remains unexplained except by reference to a miracle and a blessing. Conversely the wine is believed to become the blood of Christ. It is believed ...

Spelling Tips 8 Words with Variant Spellings - Get Proofed!

Spelling Tips 8 Words with Variant Spellings - Get Proofed! Spelling Tips: 8 Words with Variant Spellings Spelling isn’t easy. It’s bad enough we have words that sound the same  but are spelled differently and have different meanings. On top of that, we have words that are spelled differently but mean the same thing! These are known as variant spellings. What Are Variant Spellings? Variant spellings occur when a word has more than one accepted spelling. This shouldn’t be confused with regional spellings (such as when the British spell â€Å"color† as â€Å"colour†). Nor is it quite the same as when a word has an old-fashioned, archaic spelling (such as when â€Å"jail† was spelled â€Å"gaol†). A better example is â€Å"donut,† which is a modern variation of â€Å"doughnut.† The older spelling is still more common in American English, but â€Å"donut† has been catching up in recent years (primarily thanks to the success of Dunkin’ Donuts). Importantly, though, both are â€Å"correct† spellings of this word. You cant go wrong with a doughnut (or a donut). 8 Words with Variant Spellings Other examples of common words with variant spellings include: 1. Among/Amongst This word has two accepted endings (similar terms include amid/amidst and while/whilst). The â€Å"-st† ending is much less common in American English. 2. Archaeology/Archeology The older spelling here is the â€Å"ae† one, which is also more common (especially outside America). There are other words in American English that allow the â€Å"ae† variation (e.g., esthetics/aesthetics). But with most similar terms, American English prefers the â€Å"e† version (e.g., encyclopedia, not encyclopaedia). 3. Axe/Ax â€Å"Axe† is the most common spelling of this word, especially outside North America. But, in American English, â€Å"ax† is a common variant. 4. Collectible/Collectable These spellings are both accepted in American English, but â€Å"collectible† is by far the most common. 5. Dialog/Dialogue These are variations of the same word, but â€Å"dialog† is more common in relation to computing (e.g., dialog box) and â€Å"dialogue† is used when referring to two people talking. Similar spelling variations include analog/analogue (with â€Å"analog† more common in all contexts) and prolog/prologue (with â€Å"prologue† most common). 6. Disk/Disc â€Å"Disk† is generally more common than â€Å"disc,† but there are some cases where this is reversed. For example, in computing, magnetic storage devices are spelled with a â€Å"k† (e.g., floppy disk), but optical storage devices (e.g., a CD or DVD) are â€Å"discs.† 7. Flyer/Flier â€Å"Flyer† is the most common spelling here, but â€Å"flier† is also used (especially when referring to something that flies rather than a leaflet advertising something). 8. Usable/Useable â€Å"Usable† is by far the most common spelling of this word, but â€Å"useable† is also accepted in all regional dialects of English. Nobody is quite sure why. How to Handle Variant Spellings The list above isn’t comprehensive, but it should give you an idea of what to look out for with variant spellings. Consistency is key with words like these, so pick one spelling and use it throughout your document. It’s also vital to proofread your work to make sure everything is consistent (you can use the ‘Find’ function in Microsoft Word to look for variant spellings). Beyond that, there are two things you can do when confronted with two spellings of the same word: Check your style guide (if you have one) to see if it specifies a preferred spelling Use Google’s n-gram viewer to check which spelling is more common You can then use this to guide your choice about which spelling to use. A doughnut-based n-gram.

Elements of a Program Evaluation Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Elements of a Program Evaluation - Research Paper Example (MSCC, 2010) If I was in the position of a program evaluator, it is vital to understand the different elements that form the diverse groups that seek grants and other services from the institution. To do this, I would get information as to the backgrounds of the different groups, because each individual is from different backgrounds, hence the needs and wants may differ from person to person. Another factor would be to determine whether culture plays a part in the services that they require. Culture is considered the main factor for individuals, and hence determining as to whether it is a pivotal aspect can serve to address the different groups depending on their requirements. (Moore, 2011) When assessing the requirements for the agency, using questionnaires and interviews will aid in collecting valuable data to address the needs. The agency is established on providing services that will assist or aid various people. Getting the opinions from the latter will be vital in addressing what the agency will be required to provide to improve assistance to individuals who seek assistance from the institution (MSCC, 2010). Using questionnaires and interviews is an ideal measure of obtaining information. Requesting feedback is another means of collecting data. When utilizing the questionnaires and interviews, they should be a sample of each of the diverse groups, so that the process takes less time but still addresses each of the groups and their opinions. Multiculturalism is a factor that evident in the various diverse groups that deal with the agency. In order to address the cultural diversity, it is important to establish the level of cultural diversity that influences the clients. Using the surveys and interviews will serve to provide the essential data that will provide an outlook as to the different influences based on culture. With the data collected, it will be important to establish
